As the spring athletics season kicks off, the boys and girls tennis teams are looking ahead to a successful season. This will be the tennis program’s second year competing at the varsity level and they have no intention of shying away from tough competition.
Returning starters on the boys team, Luke Mackay, John Vento, Marsh Hickman, and Roy Ryder have nothing but high expectations for this upcoming season. “Overall, I think we are a lot better than we were last season and we are more mature and experienced.” stated Mackay when asked about this year’s team. Two new players will be joining the tennis roster this spring, Will Harris and Aiden Roberts, who will add to the strength of the team and surely make a positive impact. Another new face on the court this year is the new head coach, Vaughan Machado. Machado, who also coaches varsity football, was the tennis pro at Sankaty Golf and Tennis Club for years. Vaughn’s knowledge and experience will be a huge asset to the boys team this year.
The girl’s varsity program also has their sights set high for the upcoming season. They will be coached for the second year in a row by head coach Mikala Seitz. Mikala was a college tennis player whose knowledge and experience has been a big help to the girls team so far this year. With returning players such as Grace Shannon, Sophie Gerardi, and Haleigh Johnson, the girls look to surpass last seasons outcome. When asked about the season and goals for the future, Shannon replied, “so far this season, there has been a lot of hardwork from each player and we continue to strive for our goal of improving our skills and getting better every match.”
Both the boys and girls program saw a significant increase in the number of students at the tryouts with over 30 students in attendance for each tryout. Both teams are set to square off against Sturgis East Charter School on Thursday, April fourth, with the girls team at home at the Jetties Beach tennis courts at 3:30 and the boys team away. With both teams looking ahead to a fourteen match schedule, it will be an exciting season to follow.
